Synopsis

The Short: The first of a two parter. After Fred's physics article is published she's invited to speak at a symposium. During her speech a portal opens, bringing her face to face with a demon. Angel and Gunn discover that Fred isn't the only science student who disappeared into portals in the last few years. When Fred finds out that her old professor is banishing his brightest students away because he can't deal with being out shined, Fred decides to get revenge by sending the professor to a demon dimension, but Gunn refuses to let Fred kill a man and kills the professor himself. Meanwhile Connor starts training Cordelia to fight vampires, but an awkward attraction between them makes Cordelia confront Angel with the question as to whether they were in love.

The Long: After a ''Previously on Angel'' segment (see Continuity #1) We open on Fred screaming for joy in her room over having a physics theory published. Gunn tries to read the article, but Fred quickly turns the mood romantic as they make out. In another room Angel serves soup for the host, who is still recovering from being assaulted by Wolfram & Hart. The host is adamant about not wanting to read Cordelia again after what he saw last time and the threat of Wolfram & Hart. Angel hears something and goes to investigate, only to discover Connor in Cordelia's room gathering some of her things. Angel is worried she's alone, but Connor insists she's safe. Angel wants her to have her slippers because her feet get cold, but Connor knows, as she always steals the covers. (Listen to the teaser here.)

Creature Feature

The tentacled monster is summoned by Professor Seidel to attack Fred. It was never given a name, but evidently he found it in a spell book to use against his rivals.

The voynok demon Angel fought is spiny, strong and had nine lives.

Goofs

There is a bit of a goof in the exterior shot of the Hyperion Hotel. Usually they shoot the hotel so that you are unable to see the sign which says ''The Los Altos Hotel & Apts'' on the building used for the external shots, but this week we could see it (although it was backwards).

Trivia

Although they have been mentioned several times in the past, we have never seen Cordelia's parents until we glimpsed the photo she had of them in this episode.

The comic book Angel browses in the Ghost #13.

The magazine which published Fred's article was Modern Physics Review.

New name for Angel: Sugar Pie (by the host), Sweetness (by the host) and Hulk (by Lilah).
