Synopsis

Buffy The Short: When Angel tells Cordelia and Doyle that he did not contact Buffy during his visit to Sunnydale, Buffy pays a visit and expresses her displeasure. The two have a tense reunion which is interrupted by a demonic assassin intent on killing them. The demon escapes, and Buffy and Angel decide to pursue it separately. It finds Angel and in the struggle Angel kills the demon but has some of it's blood fall into an open wound on his hand. The blood heals him and he suddenly is breathing and has a heartbeat, he's alive! Angel goes back to Doyle and Cordelia where he needs to know if this is real and permanent. Doyle agrees to visit the Oracles, who are channels for the Powers That Be. They confirm that Angel is now human and no longer a warrior for the forces of light, he is free to live his life as a human. After explaining his condition to Buffy they share a passionate night of romance. Cordelia and Doyle go out to celebrate at a bar, but Doyle has a vision of the demon returning from the dead, even stronger then before. Angel insists on fighting the demon alone, but is almost killed before Buffy saves him. Angel confronts the Oracles again and they inform him that Buffy would perish if he were to remain human, because he cannot protect her. Although he begs to be made a vampire again out of his love for her, the Oracles cannot do that. One Oracle is so touched by his love that she offers to turn back time 24 hours so he can avoid being turned human, only he and the Oracles will remember this day. He agrees and goes to see Buffy, tells her what he agreed to and kisses her good-bye. As the clock ticks to the exact time of the morning he fought the demon he suddenly finds himself in the office with an upset Buffy again. They are attacked by the demon, but this time he uses his knowledge of it's weaknesses to dispatch it quickly. Buffy leaves him having no knowledge of what they had together.

The Long: We open on Angel setting his clock and figiting with his desk in his office, as Cordelia and Doyle talk about how he spent 3 days in Sunnydale from the next room (see
Goof #1). Cordelia insists he's hurting, despite his brave facade (see Reference #1). When Angel reaches for a stake the pair rush in to stop him from killing himself, only to learn he was using it to balance his desk. He insists he's not upset about seeing Buffy, since she didn't see him. Cordelia says how she would be upset about her ex-boyfriend doing what Angel did, and they are suddenly shocked to have Buffy walk in agreeing (see Continuity #1). (Listen to the teaser here.)

Unfinished.

Creature Feature

Book Mohra Demon The Mohra demon is an assassin with regenerative powers. It requires salt to survive, and can only be killed by shattering the crystal on it's head. It has green skin and features that resemble a samurai mask. It dresses in garb similar to a samurai and carries swords and other weapons. It has glowing green blood.

Oracles We have the first appearance of the Oracles, a male and female with other worldly powers. They supposedly speak for the Power That Be, the same beings who give Doyle his visions and choose Angel to fight on the side of good. They seem precognitive, telekinetic and can alter the flow of time, but prefer to be cryptic, as they subtly direct others with their advice. They demand a tribute when people ask them for advice, usually a small item of value.

Blood In this episode they show again that vampires have an enhanced sense of smell when Angel tracks the demon by following the smell of it's blood. We also learn that at least sometime a vampire can be turned human again. It's uncertain if any vampire can be turned human by Mohra demon blood or if it had something to do with Angel's curse and the fact he had a soul.

Cool Quotes

  1. Cordelia: ''Let me explain the lore here, okay? They suffer, they fight. That's business as usual. They get groiny with each other, the world as we know it falls apart.''
Yep, that's about right. Listen to the quote
    here.

References

    Hurricane
  1. Cordelia: ''Batten down the hatches, here comes Hurricane Buffy.''
A hurricane is a severe tropical cyclone originating in the equatorial regions of the Atlantic Ocean or Caribbean Sea, traveling north, northwest, or northeast from its point of origin, and usually involving heavy rains. It is common practice to name hurricanes, starting at the beginning of the alphabet for the first of each year and working up from there. (Thanks to Melissa Evans for finding this picture.)

    Bulgaria
  2. Doyle: ''Well, she seemed a little..''
    Cordelia: ''Bulgarian in that outfit?''
Doyle: ''No, I was going to say hurt.''
The Republic of Bulgaria is a country occupying 42,855 square miles of the eastern portion of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. It is bounded by Romania on the north, most of the border being marked by the lower Danube River. The Black Sea lies to the east, Turkey and Greece to the south, Macedonia to the southwest, and the Yugoslav republic of Serbia to the west. The capital of the country is Sofia, which lies in a mountainous basin in the west, near the geographic centre of the entire Balkan region.

    Espresso
  3. Cordelia: ''Oh, they'll be into this for a while. We still have time for a cappuccino and probably the director's cut of Titanic.''
Cappuccino starts out with one espresso brewed in a larger cup, then milk, which is steamed into a thick froth, is poured on top of the espresso. Chocolate is sprinkled on top to give it a finishing touch. Also referenced by Cordelia in
    Halloween.

Titanic Titanic is a 1997 film about the doomed maiden voyage of the ship of the same name, it lasts 3 hours and 14 minutes! Plot: In his search for a blue diamond once owned by Louis XVI that was believed to have gone down with the Titanic, Brock Lovett discovers an intriguing sketch of a beautiful woman wearing the diamond on her neck. When the sketch appears on a news program, an old lady steps forward, claiming to be the woman in the drawing. She then recounts a beautiful story that took place on the ill-fated ship. The Titanic was mentioned by Buffy in Living Conditions.

    Itchy and Scratchy
  4. Cordelia: ''Yeah, the Angel and Buffy show. First they talk out their differences, then they punch them out.''
The Itchy and Scratchy Show is a cartoon within a cartoon shown on The Simpsons. It involves a cat and mouse who constantly fight each other, dying in spectacular ways.

    Let's Make A Deal
  5. Buffy: ''Are you getting anything? Because I sure smell sewer... Tunnel number one it is.''
Let's Make A Deal was a television game show hosted by Monty Hall, where choosing from a number of items, such as a door, box or envelope, was a common challenge. Usually one choice contained a fabulous prize, the rest contained useless or joke prizes. Also referenced by Amilyn in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  6. Buffy: ''The next thing I knew we're being attacked by this mutant ninja demon thing, and then we're on the floor on top of each other, and it's just really confusing being around you.''
Buffy is probably making a reference to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a comic book series that became a hit with children, spawning various toy lines, films and television series.
Ninja translates from the Japanese characters blade at heart. Often superficially perceived as referring to assassination, the more subtle connotation is one of perservance. No matter the odds, even with blade at his heart, the ninja will overcome. Today a ninja is one who practices ninjutsu, ninja skills, or more sublimely, ninpo the laws of universal truth and enlightenment.

    Kaleidoscope
  7. Cordelia: ''Jealous or not, our lives are about to kaleidoscope.''
A kaleidoscope is a tube-shaped optical instrument that is rotated to produce a succession of symmetrical designs by means of mirrors reflecting the constantly changing patterns made by bits of colored glass at one end of the tube. It is also a term used to refer to a series of changing phases or events.

    Margarita
  8. Doyle: ''In the tunnel where you fought it. Then it was in some sort of factory. I thought I tasted salt. Could have been the margarita.''
A margarita is a cocktail made with tequila, an orange-flavored liqueur, and lemon or lime juice, often served with salt encrusted on the rim of the glass.

    Ching Dynasty
  9. Angel: ''Famille Rose vase. Ch'ing dynasty. Circa 1811.''
The Ch'ing dynasty, also called Manchu dynasty (1644-1911/12), the last of the Imperial dynasties of China. Under the Ch'ing the territory of the empire grew to treble its size under the Ming dynasty, the population grew from 150,000,000 to 450,000,000, many of the non-Chinese minorities within the empire were sinicized, and an integrated national economy was established.

Continuity

    Buffy
  1. Cordelia: ''He saw Buffy. He was in Sunnydale for three days, tracking her and that thingymagiggy you saw in your vision.''
Doyle had the vision in Bachelor Party then Angel saw Buffy in Pangs.

  2. Buffy: ''Oh, boy. I was really jonesing for another heartbreaking sewer talk.''
The Prom - Buffy and Angel broke up last in the sewers beneath Sunnydale before her senior Prom.

  3. Cordelia: ''Let me explain the lore here, okay? They suffer, they fight. That's business as usual. They get groiny with each other, the world as we know it falls apart.''
Surprise - Buffy and Angel got ''groiny'', causing Angel's curse to be lifted, turning him evil.

  4. Angel: ''Not to mention the fact that you just started college.''
The Freshman - Buffy started her first year at U.C. Sunnydale.

Goofs

    Angel
  1. As Angel checks the level of his desk you can see his reflection in it, despite the fact that he is a vampire and should cast no reflection.

  2. When Angel stabs the Mohra demon, glowing green blood pumps out and spills on the floor. A moment later, the demon pulls the blade from itself and there is no blood on the blade or floor.

    Points Of View

    Mathew:

Hated it! The single best thing about this series was getting Buffy and Angel away from each other so I wouldn't have to watch those two in their star-crossed love story. Now we get a whole episode of it! Then what kind of episode is it? A Trek style non-episode! I hate those!

    4 out of 10

    Starshine:

On the other hand, for those of us who are die-hard Buffy/Angel shippers, this was the best episode ever. We finally get to see Angel as a human instead of the dark and brooding demon with a tortured soul. We couldn't help but laugh at Angel's reaction to food, say "awwwww" when he saw his reflection in the window or squeal with delight when he walked up to Buffy, took her in his arms and kissed her, in the sunlight no less. A heart wrenching episode to say the least. These star-crossed lovers showed us that the love is still there and just as strong. Damn those Powers That Be that had to foil this love story.
